Franklinton falls to Cecilia in title game, 35-32


NEW ORLEANS, La - Cecilia beats Franklinton, 35-32, in the Division II non-select football state championship at Caesars Superdome.


GAME RECAP

FOURTH QUARTER

- CECILIA FUMBLE RECOVERY. The Bulldog defense comes through big-time as they force a fumble near their 30 and get it with 26 seconds left. Cecilia looks like it is going to pull off the state championship.


- Franklinton down to the 28 as Sy Austin catches a pass and gets a sizable gain.


- Franklinton gets a couple of complete passes and are now at the Cecilia 40 with 39 seconds left.


- TOUCHDOWN CECILIA. HOLY MACKEREL, WHAT A CATCH. Diesel Solari launches it near the end zone, and the ball is tipped by a Franklinton defender but right into the hands of receiver Ellis Stewart, who goes in the end zone for a 39-yard go-ahead TD with 1:17 left. But the PAT is missed, keeping it a three-point Bulldog lead (Cecilia, 35-32 | 1:17, 4th)


- Cecilia gets a first down inside the Franklinton 40 with nearly two minutes left.


- FUMBLE RECOVERY CECILIA. Bulldogs get a huge takeaway, with Franky Frank Jr. making the fumble recovery, and they have the ball near midfield with 2:47 left.


- Cecilia faces a fourth-and-4 at the Franklinton 42. Bulldogs go for it, but a pass sails incomplete with no receiver in the vicinity. Demons take over with 3:21 left, and Cecilia has two time outs remaining.


- Cecilia fair-catches the punt at the Franklinton 48, and the Bulldogs take over from there with 4:41 left.


- Franklinton gets some breathing room, and a first down. But the Demons can't get any more, and will punt it away to Cecilia with less than five minutes to go.


- Fourth-and-long and Cecilia decides to go for a quick kick. The ball gets a tremendous bounce, and rolls dead right at the 1-yard line. Franklinton takes over with 8:26 left.


- Cecilia got inside the Franklinton 20, but fumbles. However, though the Bulldogs did recover, they lost several yards on the play.


- TOUCHDOWN AND TWO-POINT CONVERSION FRANKLINTON. Sy Austin gives Franklinton the lead early in the fourth quarter with a 14-yard TD run. Then on the two-point try, Jacob Crain throws it on a line between two defenders into the hands of Jaiden Garrett. Demons now up by three (Franklinton, 32-29 | 11:45, 4th)


- Franklinton is inside the Cecilia 20 as action shifts into the fourth and final quarter.


THIRD QUARTER

- Franklinton gets a takeaway of its own as Skyler Williams picks off a deep pass and runs it back beyond midfield with nearly three minutes to go in the quarter.


- Cecilia defensive back Gavin Solomon having a huge second half. He picked off a pass inside the Franklinton 10 on the Demons' first drive; then breaks up a fourth-down pass as Franklinton was driving again. Cecilia still up five near four minutes left in the third.

HALFTIME


- Halftime at the Caesars Superdome, and we just had a wildly entertaining opening half. Cecilia holds a five-point lead at the break.


SECOND QUARTER

- FIELD GOAL FRANKLINTON. Demons drive it down the field and get in field goal range. They get it on the final play of the first half, as Gabriel Ezell makes it from 36 yards out (Cecilia, 29-24 | :00, 2nd)


- TOUCHDOWN CECILIA. Bulldogs go 64 yards in 12 plays and score again right before the half, as Braylon Calais goes in from a yard out. Cecilia then adds the PAT. (Cecilia, 29-21 | :28, 2nd)


- Cecilia is 3-for-3 on fourth-down conversions, and all three have been made by Braylon Calais, who takes a pitch and runs it across inside the Franklinton 40 with less than two minutes left.


- TOUCHDOWN FRANKLINTON. Demons get within one as Sy Austin goes around the left side and scores from 13 yards out. Franklinton pulling another fake on the PAT and tries a pass, but it is broken up, and Cecilia remains in front. (Cecilia, 22-21 | 3:01, 2nd)


- Franklinton back on the move, as the Demons convert on third-and-long with a pass from QB Jacob Crain down inside the Cecilia 20.


- TOUCHDOWN AND TWO-POINT CONVERSION CECILIA. QB Diesel Solari finishes off the drive with a 1-yard keeper, and the Bulldogs also add two more points on a run from Braylon Calais, who caught the fake punt pass to keep the TD drive going. (Cecilia, 22-15 | 8:14, 2nd)


- Cecilia faces another fourth down and gets it again, as the Bulldogs now have a first-and-goal at the 9.


- Cecilia forced to punt. But IT'S A FAKE. Bulldogs one-up Franklinton with a bit of trickery of their own, as the punter takes the snap and then throws a pass to an open receiver, Braylon Calais, who takes it down near the Franklinton 20.


- A very entertaining first quarter comes to an end as Cecilia now trails, but the Bulldogs have possession.


FIRST QUARTER

- TOUCHDOWN AND TWO-POINT CONVERSION FRANKLINTON. On a third-and-short from the 5, Demon QB Jacob Crain sneaks it and plows forward past the goal line. Demons then line up to kick the PAT, but IT'S A FAKE. Pass from the holder, Conner Magee, goes to a wide-open Sy Austin in the end zone, and Franklinton regains the lead with successful trickery. (Franklinton, 15-14 | :40, 1st)


- Franklinton converts on a fourth down and the Demons are now in the red zone in the waning minutes of the opening quarter.


- Cecilia tries an onside kick and nearly pulls it off, but Franklinton recovers it at the last instant. Demons to take over at midfield.


- TOUCHDOWN CECILIA. Diesel Solari does get a TD after all, as he runs a keeper around the right side and in from 6 yards out. Bulldogs add the PAT as part of their first lead of the night. (Cecilia, 14-7 | 6:15, 1st)


- Cecilia nearly got a touchdown on its very first play from scrimmage, as QB Diesel Solari breaks free on a draw and goes 83 yards. But officials ruled that he was down at the Franklinton 1. Then the Bulldogs get flagged for a false start.


- TOUCHDOWN CECILIA. Wow, what an answer from the Bulldogs on the ensuing kickoff, as Braylon Calais takes it 88 yards to the house. PAT ties things up (7-7 | 9:29, 1st)


- TOUCHDOWN FRANKLINTON. A very superb opening drive by the Demons, which is capped off by a 6-yard run by Sy Austin, who takes a pitch to the right side and takes it in. PAT is good (Franklinton, 7-0 | 9:42, 1st)


The Demons (12-1) beat No. 16 West Feliciana (42-21), No. 8 Lakeshore (41-40) and No. 5 Iowa (35-29) to make it to New Orleans, and are averaging 38.3 points per game.
