City of Bogalusa Initiates Storm Water Retention Pond Project to Combat Flooding

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

BOGALUSA, Louisiana – In a proactive move to address rising concerns about flooding in the Avenue F and surrounding neighborhoods, the City of Bogalusa has embarked on an ambitious storm water management initiative. A four-acre lot off of Marshall Richardson Road is being cleared for the installation of a state-of-the-art storm water retention pond, aimed at alleviating flooding and enhancing ground drainage.

The decision to undertake this essential project stems from the increasing frequency of flooding incidents experienced by residents in the affected areas. With heavy rainfall becoming more commonplace, the need for effective water runoff management has become paramount for safeguarding the well-being of the community.

Mayor Tyrin Z. Truong expressed the City's unwavering commitment to proactively addressing the issue of flooding and preserving the quality of life for Bogalusa residents. "We recognize the challenges posed by increased flooding and runoff in certain areas of our city, and we are determined to find sustainable solutions that will benefit our citizens," stated Mayor Truong.

The storm water retention pond project will act as a vital mechanism for managing water during heavy rainfalls, enabling efficient water storage and controlled release. By effectively capturing and managing stormwater runoff, the retention pond will help reduce flooding in Avenue F and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Furthermore, the project's strategic location off of Marshall Richardson Road holds significant advantages. Not only will it offer a centralized and convenient approach to collecting water runoff, but it will also ensure minimal disruption to residents and businesses in the area during construction.

In addition to its primary objective of flood mitigation, the storm water retention pond will contribute to keeping the ground dryer, reducing the risk of water stagnation and potential issues related to standing water.

Excitingly, the City of Bogalusa plans to stock the retention pond with fish, providing residents with recreational fishing opportunities. The addition of recreational fishing aligns with the City's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its citizens and fostering a sense of community connection with nature.

As Bogalusa embraces sustainable practices and continues to prioritize the well-being of its residents, this storm water retention pond initiative reflects the City's proactive approach towards enhancing infrastructure and ensuring the long-term resilience of the community.

While still in the preliminary stages, the City of Bogalusa looks forward to witnessing the positive impact of this project on the quality of life for its residents. Through collaborative efforts and forward-thinking solutions, the City reaffirms its commitment to creating a safer, more resilient, and recreational-friendly environment for all.
